In the era of energy and ecological transition, many metals are vital to the manufacture of low-carbon technologies. Thus, these rare metals are considered strategic for the development of European industrial sectors within a decarbonized economy.
The sector of these metals, such as cobalt, lithium, nickel, platinum group metals, titanium, rare earths… is constantly growing: the OECD estimates that by 2060, the consumption of metals should increase from 7 to 19 billion tonnes per year.
Europe is currently heavily dependent on its metal imports. The Varin report, commissioned by the government, predicts that by 2030, Europe will have to import between 70% and 80% of the metals needed for the energy transition.
France must secure its supply of critical metals to meet growing demand in the coming years, particularly due to new EU standards.
